چکیده

ESPaDOnS is a new-generation cross-dispersed échelle spectropolarimeter, the commissioning phase of which is scheduled at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) for spring 2004. This instrument will provide full coverage of the optical domain (370 nm to 1,000 nm) in all polarization states (circular and linear) at a resolving power of about 70,000, with a peak efficiency of 20% (telescope and detector included). It includes a bench-mounted spectrograph, fiberfed from a Cassegrain-mounted module including all polarimetric and calibration facilities. ESPaDOnS should be the most powerful tool dedicated to stellar spectropolarimetry, therefore opening unprecedented perspectives for major issues of stellar physics, from studies of stellar interiors to investigations of stellar atmospheres, stellar surfaces, stellar magnetic fields, and to observations of circumstellar environments and extra-solar planets.

A Detailed Spectropolarimetric Analysis of the Planet- Hosting Star Wasp-12 a Detailed Spectropolarimetric Analysis of the Planet Hosting Star Wasp-12

The knowledge of accurate stellar parameters is paramount in several fields of stellar astrophysics, particularly in the study of extrasolar planets, where often the star is the only visible component and therefore used to infer the planet’s fundamental parameters. Another important aspect of the analysis of planetary systems is the stellar activity and the possible star-planet interaction. Her...

Magnetic fields, winds and X-rays of massive stars: A spectropolarimetric survey of the Orion cluster

In massive stars, magnetic fields are thought to confine the outflowing radiatively-driven wind, resulting in X-ray emission that is harder, more variable and more efficient than that produced by instability-generated shocks in non-magnetic winds. Although magnetic confinement of stellar winds has been shown to strongly modify the mass-loss and X-ray characteristics of massive OB stars, we lack...

Magnetic topologies of cool stars

Stellar magnetic fields can be investigated using several, very complementary approaches. While conventional spectroscopy is capable of estimating the average magnetic strength of potentially complex field configurations thanks to its low sensitivity to the vector properties of the field, spectropolarimetry can be used to map the mediumand large-scale structure of magnetic topologies. In partic...

A high - precision search for magnetic field oscillations in the roAp star HD 24712 ⋆ ( Research Note )

We have obtained a time series of 81 high-cadence circular polarization observations of the rapidly oscillating Ap star HD 24712 with the new ESPaDOnS spectropolarimeter at CFHT. We used the high-S/N, high-resolution Stokes I and V spectra to investigate possible variation of the mean longitudinal field over the pulsation cycle in this roAp star. Our multiline magnetic field and radial velocity...

Ubiquitous Hα Polarized Line Profiles: Absorptive Spectropolarimetric Effects and Temporal Variability in Post-agb, Herbig Ae/be and Other Stellar Types

We show here that the absorptive Hα polarized line profile previously seen in many Herbig Ae/Be (HAeBe) stars is a nearly ubiquitous feature of other types of embedded or obscured stars. This characteristic 1% linear polarization variation across the absorptive part of the Hα line is seen in Post-AGB stars as well as RV-Tau, δ-Scuti, and other types. Each of these stars shows evidence of obscur...
